Park & Pipe shoot

I was up at Killington Monday morning early, very early, like 6 am early, still pitch black early.  I was up there shooting park & pipe for Chris D and Killington.  A perfect morning, clear and warm enough not to freeze off my fingers.  We had a bunch of talented skiers and riders who were pushing it right out of the gate.  With the help of snowmobiles the athletes were lapping the jumps and rails non-stop and we ended up with a bunch of great images.  Here is a selection from the morning.  A special thanks goes out to Rosey and the Killington park & pipe crew, the fellas running the snow machines, and Chris D for getting me up there to shoot.

Two resorts, one afternoon.

Justin Reyher and Mike Horn, of Backcountry Magazine fame took a little road trip to central Vermont to meet me for an afternoon of skiing at Ascutney Mountain.  I thought it would be a good idea to check out Ascutney since it is practically in my backyard and none of us had skied it before.   Unfortunately, even with some fresh snow and sunny and warm skies only the bottom third of the mountain was open.  After three runs the boredom set in and we decided to bail.  Where too?  Okemo?  Suicide Six?  Being that it was MLK weekend and the crowds were sure to be big at Okemo we decided on the Six - right here in Woodstock.  After three great runs at the Six and 1950 feet of vertical under our belts we decided to call it a day and go quench our thirst.  Here are a few snapshots.

The one and only lift running at Ascutney and they made you get off at the mid-station??
Mike Horn, snowboarder, dam glad to meet you.

rain

Just not a good week to be a ski photographer in New England.  I hear we are at the end of this stretch of warm weather though.  Unfortunately it's ending with a whole lot of rain.  Might have to go invest in a bottle of attitude adjustment tonight and watch my VHS copy of Hotdog, the movie.

Suicide Six

All that talk and press about how this has been the best start to a ski season ever.  Well Mother Nature gave us a good slap to the face and reminded me that I do in fact live in Vermont.  The last week or so has been horrible.  40's, 50's, even 60's on Tuesday and some good periods of rain.  Oh well.  If you have the need for soft snow, head out to Utah.  Jay at Solitude emailed me to say they have received over 10 feet since Christmas and 2 feet yesterday.  Good for them.  Dragged my ass out of my office and away from the internet for a few hours today to make some turns at Suicide Six right here in my home town of Woodstock. (technically it's Pomfret but...)  How could I not, it was 45, not a cloud in the sky and not a breath of wind.  Unfortunately the Six only had two trails open so it got a lot boring a little quick.  The good news is that I was one of 7 people skiing.  Brought along my girlfriends little digital point and shoot and took these.  Fun little camera to shoot with and doesn't require a big bulky backpack.  Let's hope for some colder weather and snow!

Kate & Will

What does an East coast ski photographer do when it's 55 degrees outside in mid-Janurary? He goes to Boston to see his new Niece and Nephew. This morning they had their very first photo shoot. I'm not sure how happy they were with it all, but I think the results were great.

Meet my Niece and Nephew.

Will checking out Mom's fingers.

Kate getting a little tired.

Perfect.

Yeahhhhh.

Will getting pissed at me and Kate just not caring.
